Joseph Guyot

Jos. Guyot, the energetic janitor of the University, is rustling around like leaves in autumn, making preparations for the New England supper at the Varsity tomorrow evening. The 1900 United States census showed Joseph Guyot (age 43, born in May 1857 in Vermont, janitor at the University of North Dakota) married to Mary (age 39, born in August 1860 in Canada) and living in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Children Evangelina (age 11, born in December 1888 in North Dakota) and Ivy (age 9, born in December 1890 in North Dakota) were living with the couple.

Joseph Guyot, his wife, and child were in the Main Building at the University of North Dakota when the June 16, 1887, Grand Forks/East Grand Forks struck.

One Death. Special to the Globe. Grand Forks, Dak., Feb. 10.- The first death at the university from diphtheria occurred to-day, that of the janitor’s child. All the sick students had been removed. (The Saint Paul Daily Globe, Monday Morning, February 11, 1889, Volume XI, Number 42, Page 1)
